In today’s world of wearables and performance metrics, it’s never been easier to measure our training. Heart rate, pace, power, VO₂ max, recovery scores — data surrounds us. But with so much information at our fingertips, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters.
The truth is, an over-reliance on numbers can sometimes hold us back. When every session is dictated by a screen, we risk missing the deeper signals that tell us how we’re actually performing — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Becoming an Intuitive Athlete
Learning to train by feel is one of the most valuable skills an athlete can develop. This doesn’t mean abandoning data altogether — it means using it as a guide, not a rulebook.
A simple but powerful method for this is RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) — a scale that measures effort based on how hard you feel you’re working. Over time, training with RPE helps athletes tune into their bodies, build awareness, and make smarter decisions in real time.
Training intuitively can help you to:
-
Stay focused on the intent of each session rather than chasing numbers
-
Challenge your mental limits and expand your physical capacity
-
Recognise when you need rest or recovery
-
Build confidence in your ability to self-regulate on race day
An intuitive athlete can balance both data and instinct — understanding that performance is shaped by more than metrics alone.
Mindset: Finding Control in the Chaos
Developing mental control is just as important as physical preparation. The ability to stay composed when sessions feel chaotic or races don’t go to plan is what separates consistency from collapse.
Just like any other system, your mindset can be trained. Start by paying attention to the thoughts and narratives that influence your performance.
Challenge your limits
When your head says you’re done, pause. Are you genuinely at your limit, or has your mind given up before your body?
Rewrite the story
Notice how you talk to yourself mid-session. Replace “I can’t” with “I’m learning.” Shift from frustration to curiosity — each effort teaches you something new.
Know your why
Understanding your purpose keeps you grounded when motivation dips. It helps you focus on your own journey, rather than comparing yourself to others.
The Takeaway
Performance isn’t defined by numbers alone. Data can guide, but intuition refines.
The more you learn to listen to your body — and manage the noise inside your head — the more you unlock your true potential as an athlete.
